A crash marked the start of the race on the Lange Munte. A breakaway then formed with Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance – Soudal Team), Gladys Verhulst-Wild (FDJ-SUEZ), Elena Pirrone (Roland), Josie Talbot (cofidis women team) and Mieke Docx (lotto dstny ladies), opening up a gap of three minutes twenty on the peloton.
Shortly before Koppenberg, a general regrouping took place. The slippery cobbles caused problems, trapping favourites such as Kopecky (SD word protime) and Vollering (SD worx protime).
Finally, Longo Borghini (Lidl trek) and Niewiadoma (canyon SRAM) managed to pull away from the rest of the group to join Van Anrooij. The three riders battled out victory in a sprint, won by Van Anrooij. And it was on formidable segments such as the Mur de Grammont and the Paterberg that our cyclists proved their worth, with Loes Adegeest taking 16th place.
The 2024 Tour of Flanders for women was the fruit of teamwork and cohesion on the part of our riders, who took on the best teams in the peloton.
