Three days after finishing on the podium at the Amstel Gold Race, Demi Vollering won the Flèche Wallonne for the second time in her career on Wednesday. The European champion secured a commanding victory at the top of the Mur de Huy, confirming her dominance in the Ardennes classics.
As is the case every year, the race was decided on the gruelling slopes of the Mur de Huy (1.3 km at 10%). After her teammates had worked hard to get her into position, Demi tackled the final climb from an ideal position.
True to her attacking style, the Dutch rider took the initiative early on. With over 500 metres to go, she launched a sharp burst of speed that immediately left most of her rivals behind, including Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (Visma Lease a Bike), who was struggling on the steepest sections.
Although Demi quickly built up a substantial lead, she had to contend with a late charge from Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Premier Tech) in the final metres. Keeping her cool, the team leader managed her effort right to the summit to hold on to a few lengths’ lead at the finish line.
Winning in Huy for the second time, Demi Vollering continues her winning streak following her victories in the Ronde and the Omloop. This latest success comes just a few days before the final classic race of the season, this Sunday’s “Doyenne”, Liège–Bastogne–Liège.
